As one steps into the 12 by 24 foot metal building behind Lebron Batey’s house, stacks of wood blocks line the walls shaped like pieces of pie 16 inches long and two inches thick; these blocks of Ingleman spruce and curly maple will one day vibrate with the sounds of Bill Monroe or perhaps Beethoven.

“I match the piece of wood up ahead of time depending on the type of fiddle I want to make,” he said.
