Dr. James  Pemberton

Dr. James Michael "Mike" Pemberton passed away on 1-13-22 in Rome, GA at the age of 79. He was born in Nashville, TN in 1942 to the late Mary Helen Routon Pemberton and George Thomas Pemberton. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Anne Elizabeth Pemberton. Mike grew up in the Belle Mead area of Nashville and graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy in 1960. He received his BA in English from the University of the South (Sewanee, TN) in 1964. He met his wife, Nancy, at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville where they both received their MAs in English together in 1966. Mike also received the MLS (Masters in Library Science) and the Ph.D. (English) at UTK. Mike married Nancy Anne Garrett in Laurens, SC in 1965. They were married for 51 years before her passing in 2016. He was employed as a professor of Information Sciences with Emeritus status at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville from 1977 to 2008. He also worked as an English instructor (UTK), a university archivist (University of Alabama-Huntsville), a librarian (UA-H), a consultant with his own firm (Information Management Associates, Inc.), and as an executive editor of an international professional journal (Information Management, Association of Records Managers and Administrators). He moved from Knoxville to Rome, GA in 2018 to be with family. Mike is survived by his son, John Garrett Pemberton, of Rome, GA, John's sons, Truett and Titan, and Mike's sister, Susan T. Pemberton of Paris, TN, as well as his sister-in-law, Jean Garrett Allgood, and his brother-in-law, Al Allgood, of Tucker, GA. Mike's wishes were to be cremated and there will be no formal services. Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, makes this announcement for the family.
