Mrs. Janette Hood Edwards, age 97, of Rome, GA, passed away June 7, 2021 at Floyd Medical Center following a fall. Mrs. Edwards was born May 25, 1924, in Nicholson, Georgia, to the late Andrew "Okee" Hood and the late Annie Douglas Hood. She was also preceded in death by her husband of almost 40 years, William Agnew Edwards, and her eldest daughter, Marie Edwards Ponder. Mrs. Edwards grew up in Jefferson, Georgia, and graduated from The Martin Institute in 1942. She attended LaGrange College and the University of Georgia. She received a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics in 1946 from the University of Georgia. Following graduation, she began her teaching career in Menlo, Georgia, where she met her future husband, William "Bill" Edwards. They married March 30, 1949. In 1955, they moved from Menlo to Rome. Janette took time off from teaching to raise their five daughters. Once all the daughters were in school, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Library Science from Shorter College. In 1968, she continued in her education career as Librarian at College Street Elementary in Cedartown, Georgia. She retired from the Polk County School system in 1984. Mrs. Edwards joined Westminster Presbyterian Church in September 1956. She led a long and productive life centered around her family and her church. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. For many years, she served as Treasurer of the Women of the Church and as a Trustee of Westminster. She delivered Meals on Wheels, participated in Meals and More, was a member of the Westminster Women's Circle, Georgia Retired Educators Association, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Embroiderers' Guild. She enjoyed various types of needle work and especially enjoyed sewing for her children and grandchildren. She and Bill enjoyed square dancing with the Roman Squares in the 1980's and she made their outfits. After Bill passed away in 1989, Janette enjoyed traveling with her daughter Jane to 49 of the United States (somehow, they missed Idaho). They also visited Scotland and Canada. Their last trip was to The Ark Encounter in Kentucky. While there, Janette, at age 94, rode a camel. Mrs. Edwards took great pleasure to celebrating family birthdays and prepared delicious meals and cakes. She always had a large table for everyone to gather around. In her later years, she always had a jigsaw puzzle in progress and liked to have others join in to help. She had a beautiful, ever welcoming smile and a sweet, quiet spirit. She showed love and grace to everyone and set an example for all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Mrs. Edwards is survived by her daughters and sons-in-laws; Kay Fincher, Jane & David Bentley, Susan Paul, Beth & Mark Lane; grandchildren and spouses, Jessica Gattenby & Brian Butler, Austin Gattenby, Josh & Lacey Fincher, Julie Fincher, Sarah & Cody May, Kelly & Josh Ghobadpoor; four great granddaughters, Jade Fincher, Amiah Gattenby, Carson and Taylor May; and caregiver Shanna Agan. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1941 Shorter Ave., Rome, Georgia. Dr. Renee Meyer will officiate. Masks are required. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church Building Fund. Interment will be in Alpine Cemetery, Menlo, Georgia. Henderson and Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel, has charge of the arrangements.
