A 56-year-old man who walked off from an outside detail at the Floyd County Jail Wednesday was captured shortly after an alert went out, Sheriff Dave Roberson confirmed.
Area schools went into lockdown after Charles Bowman was reported missing from his outside detail but he was captured around 3 p.m. at a residence on Charlton Street in Summerville Park.
“We’d like to thank all the news agencies for quickly sharing the (information) as well as the Fugitive Task Force, Floyd County Prison, Department of Corrections, Rome Police Department, Floyd County Police Department, Georgia State Patrol and Norfolk Southern for assisting us in a quick capture,” said Corey Bowers with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office.
As a precaution, schools in that area — including Rome High and Middle schools as well as the Model area schools — temporarily went into lockdown.
Bowman was initially arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine and probation violation in September 2021 was being held in jail without bond. A felony escape charge will be added, jail officials said.
