A suspicious blaze early Saturday morning caused extensive damage to Garrett Salvage, 3005 Alabama Highway, according to the Rome-Floyd Fire Department.

Firefighters got the call at 2:54 a.m. Saturday and remained on the scene putting out hot spots until around 1 p.m.

Both eastbound lanes of Alabama Highway were blocked for hours Saturday morning as firefighters battled the blaze.

Battalion Chief Greg Abbott said Saturday the cause of the fire is still undetermined and it may be a couple of days before the fire marshals’ office personnel can make a thorough investigation because of the amount of debris.

At least three and possibly four buildings spread around the western and southern edges of the property were extensively damaged, but the main building at the complex was not significantly damaged. Roofs collapsed on at least two of the buildings.

Abbott could not put a value on the loss but said the buildings were full of salvage materials, primarily doors and windows.
