The best of the best will descend on Rome this weekend as the 2020 Georgia Elite Classic comes to Barron Stadium. The all-star weekend will feature some of Georgia’s best high and middle school football athletes.
This is the eighth annual edition of the football showcase.
Rome senior running back EJ Lackey will be one of four Wolves to represent the hometown high school in the Georgia Elite Classic. The other three represent Rome High School’s talented freshman class as quarterback Reece Fountain, tight end Martavious Collins and wide receiver DeKaylon Daniel all accepted invites to the freshman team.
Pepperell sophomore running back DJ Rogers, who became a force to be reckoned with for the Dragons, will be a member of the sophomore team. Fellow Dragon Dawson Duncan will represent Lindale as a senior offensive lineman.
Darlington junior Patrick Shelley, sophomore offensive lineman Gatlin Hancock and freshman defensive tackle Truitt Hayworth will all represent the Tigers in the weekend event.
Armuchee’s Grant Taylor will appear on the senior team as an offensive lineman.
Unity Christian sophomore Eli Thompson will represent the Lions as a cornerback on the sophomore team. Thompson, who also played on offense, recorded a 62-yard fumble return for a touchdown in Unity’s final game of the season against Peachtree Academy.
Cedartown juniors Jai Barnes and CJ Washington accepted their invitations to participate in the GA Elite Classic. Barnes and Washington both play on the Bulldogs’ defensive line.
Cedartown sophomore linebacker Eli Barrow will also represent the Bulldogs with the sophomore team.
Chattooga’s Nic Hester also received and accepted an invitation to the freshman team.
Rockmart senior quarterback Javin Whatley, who was recently named Region 6-AAA Player of the Year, will also suit up for the senior team. Fellow Yellow Jacket Dennis Sims will play wide receiver as a sophomore.
Rome Middle School’s Chrisden Dublin will participate in the seventh vs. eighth grade game, listed as a wide receiver and defensive back.
The schedule will feature practices Saturday and games Sunday. The Sunday schedule feature the seventh vs. eighth grade game begins at 10 a.m., followed by the senior vs. junior game at 1 p.m. and the freshman vs. sophomore contest at 3:45 p.m.
