Track and Field

The aim for every track and field athlete is to have their best showing when it means the most at the end of the season. The Gordon Central and Sonoraville Boys and Girls teams had several athletes accomplish that goal this week.

Gordon Central hosted the Region 7-AA Meet on Monday and Tuesday at Ratner Stadium while Sonoraville visited Rockmart High for the Region 6-AAA Meet on Monday and Wednesday, and both programs saw many of their athletes put on impressive performances to rack up team points and punch their ticket to GHSA Sectionals.

The Gordon Central Boys and Girls each had great meets, racking up enough points to earn runner-up finishes in the team standings on their home track. The Lady Warriors totaled 140.5 points to take second behind region champion Pepperell (159.5) and finish ahead of third-place Chattooga (107). The Gordon Central boys compiled 135 points as they finished behind region champ Model (193) and ahead of Fannin County (82).

The Lady Warriors were led by three region-title winners, including two from Tayla Gunn who won both the long jump (15-10.5) and the triple jump (34-01.5). Jasmine Ullman also earned the region crown in the shot put with a 32-05.

Other Sectionals qualifiers (top four finishers) for the Gordon Central girls were Meredith Campuzano in the discus (second, 92-01), Ullman in the discus (third, 81-00), Kayla Caudill in the long jump (second, 15-01) and triple jump (fourth, 30-06), Arwen Boyle in the pole vault (third, 6-00), the 4x100 meter relay team of Caudill, Gunn, Heaven Potts and Cassie Chastain (fourth, 56.25), Jasmine Velasco in the 1600 meter (third, 6:35.07) and 3200 meter (third, 14:43.16), Gunn in the 100 meter hurdles (second, 18.00), Sarai Tituana in the 800 meter (fourth, 2:53.28), the girls 4x400 meter relay team of Chastain, Gunn, Caudill and Potts (fourth, 4:49.67) and the girls 4x800 meter relay team of Velasco, Tituana, Emily Fraire and Joanna Aparicio (third, 14:30.71).

The Gordon Central boys had two event region titles with Joey Kowalczewski winning the 3200 meter (10:30.68) and the 4x400 meter relay team of Kowalczewski, Donovan Massingill, Yostin Reyes and Camdon Miles taking the top spot with a time of 3:36.32.

The Warriors also got sectionals-qualifying performances from Miles in the long jump (fourth, 19-11.5), the triple jump (second, 40-08.5) and the 400 meter dash (second, 53.53), the 4x100 meter relay team of Massingill, D’Andre McIntosh, Isaac Martinez and Joshua Wilson (second, 45.23), Kowalczewski in the 1600 meter (second, 4:48.72) and 800 meter (second, 2:01.32), Reyes in the 400 meter dash (third, 55.09), Michael Jordan in the 110 meter hurdles (second, 17.63) and 300 meter hurdles (second, 44.97), Ethan Massingill in the 110 meter hurdles (fourth, 18.51) and Josh Beavers in the 300 meter hurdles (fourth, 45.42).

At Rockmart it was the Sonoraville Girls with a solid showing as they earned region runner-up honors as a team with 116 points. Rockmart grabbed the region title with 168.5 points, and Coahulla Creek finished third with 95.5 points.

The Lady Phoenix had several event region titles as they were led by Riley Triplett who won the 1600 meter (5:36.17) and the 3200 meter (12:12.44). Also claiming region championships were Brynley Walraven in the 400 meter dash (1:02.21), the 4x400 meter relay team of Kynlee Austin, Liz Bautista, Emily McBurnett and Kendall Whitehead (4:34.15), Taylor Steele in the shot put (32-09) and Whitehead in the pole vault (J7-06).

Fellow Sectionals qualifiers for the Sonoraville girls were Austin in the 100 meter hurdles (third, 19.53) and 300 meter hurdles (third, 55.00), Walraven in the 200 meter dash (third, 28.56), Olyvia Hopper in the discus (second, 85-05.5), Kayleigh Kelley in the high jump (fourth, 4-02) and Chloe Parker in the pole vault (second, J7-06).

The Sonoraville Boys tallied 118 points as a team to take third in the standings behind region champion Rockmart (162.5) and Coahulla Creek (129). The Phoenix had three event region championships, including Jadon Thomason in the 300 meter hurdles (42.37), JT Vess in the pole vault (J12-03) and the 4x400 meter relay team of Nick Beddington, Colton Whitehead, Thomason and Tanner Hicks (3:40.53).

Rounding out the strong performances for Sectionals berths for the Sonoraville boys were the 4x800 meter relay team of Nahum Trenti, Bryant Blandon, Andrew Carey and Ethan Hibberts (second, 8:58.12), the 4x100 meter relay team (second, 45.06), Hicks in the 400 meter dash (third, 53.19) and 200 meter dash (third, 23.66), Beddington in the 110 meter hurdles (third, 17.08), Hibberts in the 800 meter (2:08.60), Chase Bonds in the 300 meter hurdles (second, 44.08), Townsend in the 300 meter hurdles (third, 44.31), Trenti in the 3200 meter (third, 11:19.20) and Julian Aguilar in the discus (third, 114-04.75).

Next up for both teams will be the GHSA Sectionals Meets on Saturday, May 8. Gordon Central will host the Class AA B Sectionals, and Sonoraville will travel to Lakewood Stadium in Atlanta for the Class AAA B Sectionals.
