When a team has battled together for several months over the course of a season, the end is always tough. That’s what both Calhoun and Sonoraville faced on Wednesday as they saw their 2021 campaigns come to a close, each in the second round of their respective state tournaments.
The Jackets were swept by Greenbrier as they were eliminated from the Class AAAAA State Playoffs while the Phoenix suffered a similar fate, dropping two tough games at the hands of Franklin County to close their season in the second round of the Class AAA State Playoffs.
Calhoun (20-9) traveled to Augusta on Monday as they were scheduled to start their doubleheader that afternoon, but weather forced postponements both Monday and Tuesday. When they finally got on the field, Greenbrier’s pitching staff made it tough on the Jackets, limiting them to just two runs in two games.
Greenbrier (26-5) won Game 1 6-2 and then completed the sweep by defeating the Jackets 2-0. Calhoun trailed 2-1 going to the fourth in Game 1 before tying the game with a run in the top of the inning, but Greenbrier put together a four-run fifth that proved to be the difference.
Jacob Tolson and Jake Slaughter each had a hit and an RBI in Game 1, and Dante Morton and Andon Lewis each contributed two hits. Hagan Banks and Kris Sutton also had hits. Banks started on the mound and went six innings, allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out nine.
The Jackets fell behind early in Game 2 as Greenbrier scored one run in the first. They then added one more in the fourth and held Calhoun off the scoreboard from there.
Calhoun had 11 hits in Game 2 but left 10 on base in the shutout. Lewis led the way with a 3-for-4 effort while Sutton and Morton added two hits apiece, including a double for Sutton. Tolson, Braden Saunders, John Andrew Cash and Parker Lester also had hits in the loss.
Bryse Ingle took the tough-luck loss for the Jackets as he pitched five innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out seven. Saunders tossed two innings of scoreless relief and struck out three.
Sonoraville (19-13) lost Game 1 by a 10-0 score and then fell in Game 2 12-2 to Franklin County (31-3). The Phoenix were held to just one hit in Game 1 with that coming from Trevor Childers.
In Game 2, Jaxon Pate had a hit and an RBI. Cole Godfrey drove in one run, Tanner Folds contributed a double, Childers had a hit and a run scored and Hayden Holsomback also had a hit.
Greenbrier moves on to face Starr’s Mill in the Class AAAAA Elite Eight, and Franklin County advances to the third round of the Class AAA State Playoffs to square off against the winner of the Long County-Pike County series.
