The Jackets battled throughout the contest against a very talented No. 4 seed, but the visiting Chapel Hill Panthers put the stamp on the game with a 15-0 run to end it to send Calhoun to a season-ending loss on Wednesday in the first round of the Class AAAAA State Tournament.
Calhoun (15-11) trailed 9-6 after one quarter and 22-19 at the half as the game remained close for much of the night. Chapel Hill (16-10) extended the lead a bit in the third to take a 36-28 to the fourth quarter and put the game away with a big fourth in which they outscored the Jackets 20-8.
“The score doesn’t indicate how close this game was until the end,” said Calhoun head coach Vince Layson. “We had some calls that didn’t go our way and lost our composure a bit. Hate that’s the way it ends, but I feel like we still overachieved in the end this season.”
KJ Doucet was the top scorer in the game as he led Chapel Hill with 15 points. Kelvin Hunter and Devon Wiggins each added 11 for the Panthers, who advance to take on Lithonia in the second round of the state tournament.
Dylan Faulkner led the Jackets with 12 points as he was the only player on his team to reach double digits in scoring. Peyton Law added six, and Christopher Lewis and Jaylan Harris each scored five.
