YOUTH SOCCER: Arsenal Select teams end spring season going 5-1

The YMCA’s Arsenal Rome Select teams went 5-1 in the last weekend of regular season play. The club’s season record is now 21-10-3.

The G13 team had a championship weekend of soccer, defeating UFA South 4-0 on Saturday and Southern Soccer Academy’s Blue Select team 6-1 on Sunday. Arsenal’s two victories moved the girls into first place with a 9-2-1 record, making them the champions of Athena C West.

Against 10th place UFA South’s girls out of Tifton, Jayden Boswell opened the scoring in the 29th minute on an assist by Lauren Akemon. Ashley Medrano, Amarantha Hernandez and Maggie Eddins added goals early in the second. Rome keeper Emma Couch earned the shutout while making two saves.

Arsenal got off to a quick start against SSA Blue when Janet Hartman scored the game’s first goal in the 2nd minute, assisted by Eddins. Rome doubled its lead seven minutes later when Eddins scored her first of two goals, this one assisted by Haley Guerrero.

SSA Blue cut Rome’s lead in half with 10 minutes left in the first half, but Boswell and Eddins scored twice to take a commanding 4-1 lead before the break. Rome’s last goal came in the final two minutes when Rhiannon Simpson scored on a volley, assisted by Haley Guerrero.

The B13 team lost to Buckhead White 4-1 on Saturday and upset Concorde Fire Silver 6-2 on Sunday for a 5-5-1 record. Rome’s Junior Morente is first in the team’s division and in the club with 16 goals.

The B14 team traveled to beat the Dekalb Jaguars 3-0 on Saturday and then topped UFA Gold 3-1 on Sunday to move them into fourth place with a 7-3-1 record. Rome’s Andreas Svardh is first in the division with nine goals.

The Academy teams went 11-6-2 during their final regular season weekend. Their season record is above .500 with 64 wins, 63 losses and 13 ties.

The B12 Red team placed second in the top 11-on-11 division of the Georgia State Academy Cup over the weekend against the top teams from around the state. Arsenal Rome allowed a fluke goal with under two minutes to play to end in a 2-2 tie with SSA Predator Blue II.

Rome then got a 3-2 win over a strong UFA team from the Norcross area. Keeper Josh McCreless and strikers Gonzalo Lemus and Charlie Garcia kept this game close until Davis Yeargan scored in the final five minutes.

The Arsenal Rome team defeated GSA 2-1 on Sunday morning thanks to a game-winning goal from Ricky Frisiani on a one-touch pass from Charlie Garcia. The defense of Isaac Vardy, Guillermo Jimenez, Luis Sandoval, Gavyn Williams and Wesley Ordonez did the rest.

Rome won pool play and advanced to the finals with SSA Predator Blue, a top team in the state and Region III. The Rome boys battled hard as the score was 0-0 at half. Arsenal ended up falling short, losing 4-1. The Arsenal B12 Red are ranked in the top 10 in Georgia.

The B12 White team won the highest 8-on-8 division in the Academy Cup. They beat Mays White 4-0 and NASA Royal 7-2 on Saturday before defeating UFA Bronze 4-0 on Sunday to get into the championship match where they beat NASA Select 3-1.

The B11 team lost to SSA Predator 6-0 and then beat SSA Copa 4-2. Goals came from Tyler Garrett (2), Zander Zuker (assisted by Jack Robinson) and Tucker Wright (assisted by Jacob Fisher). Will Payne and Jacob Davis shared the keeper duties.

The B10 team lost to SSA Predator 5-0 and then beat SSA Mundial 4-2. The B9 team beat SSA Predator 5-4 with two goals from Giovani Echanique and a hat trick from Evans Drinkard. The B8 team then beat SSA Mundial 3-0 with goals from Gabriel Sandoval, Tripp Watterson and Wallace Ordonez Ajtun.

The G12 team lost Saturday in the Academy Cup to Concorde Fire Black 6-0 and MAYS Striker Blue 2-1. They lost to the Georgia Storm 4-0 on Sunday. The G9 team tied SSA Predator 3-3 and then lost to Mundial 9-0.
