Local children will have a chance to test their basketball skills next month as part of a free competition coordinated by the Rome area Knights of Columbus.
The first Rome area Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship will be March 11 at Saint Mary’s Catholic School, 401 E. Seventh St., just behind Bojangle’s on Turner McCall Boulevard. Boys and girls ages 9-14 are eligible to enter, and will compete against contestants within their own gender and age group.
Competition begins with the 9-11 year olds at 10 a.m., followed by the 12-year-old participants at 1 p.m., 13 year olds at 2 p.m. and 14 year olds at 3 p.m. Winners will be announced after each age group.
The event will be held indoors at the Saint Mary’s School gym with Knights of Columbus members and colleagues staffing each shooting station as well as providing regulation-sized basketballs to competitors.
There is no registration fee, however each participant must complete an entry form, which is available to print online at bit.ly/kofcfreethrowentryform.
Parents or guardians must also accompany the participants while they are competing.
Each contestant gets 15 shots with the winners determined by the most shots made. A five-shot tiebreaker will be used as necessary.
On-site registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and participants are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to their session.
Light concessions will be available.
