The YMCA’s Arsenal Rome B13 team won the Gold Division championship of the Atlanta Super Cup tournament held in Marietta this past weekend.
In the first game on Saturday, the team lost to CFA Dalton 05 Elite 1-0. Dalton scored off a 45-yard free kick in the 2nd half. Goalkeeper Will Payne had 7 saves.
In the 2nd game, the team defeated UFA Forsyth 05B Gold 1-0. Steven Villatoro scored the lone goal with an assist from Joshua Hernandez. Goalkeeper Payne had 5 saves.
In the first game on Sunday, the team defeated Cherokee Impact U13 Elite 1-0. Tucker Wright scored with an assist from Steven Villatoro. Goalkeeper Payne had 3 saves.
By finishing second in pool play, the team advanced to the championship game against undefeated CFA Dalton 05 Elite. This time, the Arsenal team bested Dalton 2-0, winning the championship. Gavyn Williams scored the first goal, dribbling past several Dalton defenders in the mid-field. Then, Steven Villatoro scored his 2nd goal of the tournament, with an assist from Isaiah Johnson. Goalkeeper Payne had 6 saves.
The Arsenal boys played exceptional defense all weekend long allowing only 1 goal in 4 games. Their back line and midfield worked hard and made it extremely difficult for the other teams to form any attack. The Arsenal B13 will be playing the spring season in Georgia’s Soccer Association Classic II league, which begins March 3rd. They will be traveling to Atlanta to face the Atlanta Fire Elite.
The B11 were also in the Atlanta Super Cup making it to the championship game. They beat UFA Forsyth 07B Gold 2-1 with a free kick goal from Klae Theakston and the winner from George Loveless.
In the PM game they beat AFC Lightning 07B Red 1-0 with a goal from Giovani Echanique. On Sunday they beat Smyrna Soccer Club 2007 Boys White 3-2 in the semifinal. Goals came from Angel Tapia, Dimitri Castro, and Echanique’s corner-kick golden goal in overtime.
They had a rematch with UFA Forsyth in the championship but fell 3-1. Echanique got the loan goal.
The G14 Red competed in the Concorde Fire Challenge Tournament this past weekend, winning two games and losing one.
Arsenal opened the tournament on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Henry County United Navy. Henry County took the lead with a goal in the first half, but Arsenal battled back with two second half goals to win 2-1.
Malone Christen scored both goals for Arsenal with an assist from Sarah Beth Dupree. Tatum Ballinger recorded five saves in goal.
Arsenal topped Lady Chiefs Blue 2-0 in the afternoon game. Christen notched two more goals with an assist from Emily Wyatt and Carlee Brock. Ballinger recorded the shutout in goal with six saves.
Arsenal fell to eventual tournament champion Atlanta Fire United Gold 3-1 in the Sunday morning contest. Christen recorded the lone goal in the second half with an assist from Payton Brown. Ballinger notched 11 saves in goal.
Arsenal begins the regular season on Saturday, March 3 at Grizzard Park when they play host to Ambush White.
