The Trion wrestling team wanted to make its showing in the Area 3-A duals tournament Saturday a special one following a recent tragedy that hit close to home.
And with two convincing victories on their home mats, the Bulldogs did just that to punch their ticket to the GHSA State Duals at the Macon Centreplex next weekend. Trion defeated Mount Zion-Carroll 60-18 and then overtook Gordon Lee 53-21 in the championship to claim the area duals title for the second season in a row. Gordon Lee was second while Darlington finished third.
The Bulldogs’ win comes a couple of weeks after wrestler Logan Blevins’s stepfather, Jeff Todd, passed away suddenly.
“I thought the boys stepped up to plate and really wanted to honor Logan Blevins’s stepdad,” Trion coach Eric Brock said. “I thought the boys wrestled hard. I’m very proud of them.”
Joining Trion in Macon will be the Rockmart Yellow Jackets, who took the Area 3-AA duals tournament at Heard County on Saturday. Armuchee finished second to qualify for the state tournament as well.
Brock said the efforts of lightweight wrestlers Noah Deparlier and Bo Strickland made a difference in the finals. They head to Macon after coming in third in Class A the last three years.
“This group of seniors has been through a lot and this will be their fourth trip to the state tournament,” Brock said. “So I hope the seniors remember that and come out and don’t take anybody for granted this year.”
