WRESTLING: Locals shine at state wrestling tournament

Floyd County had a strong showing Friday in the GHSA Traditional State Wrestling Tournament in Macon.
Several wrestlers from Floyd and the surrounding counties will compete today for state championships. 
Action concludes today with consolation semifinals at 9:30 a.m., consolation finals at 11 a.m. and championship finals at 3 p.m.
In Class A, Darlington’s Jule Peek defeated Athens Christian’s Zane Wolf and Irwin’s Griffin Walker to make his way to the 126-weight class championship. 
He’ll face Commerce’s Michael Patton for the title. 
Darlington’s Jordan Beck (152) defeated Athens Christian’s Zak Kellog before falling to George Walton’s Andrew Bullard. 
Beck will face Strong Rock’s Robert Maddox in the consolation bracket. 
Landon Lawrence (182) was defeated in the first and consolation rounds. 
Darlington’s Hayden Cook (170) also made his way to the title match with wins against Mt. Paran’s Matt McKenzie and Holy Innocents’ Rod Davis. He’ll face Commerce’s Trent Reddish in the championship macth. 
In Class AA Chattooga’s J.J. Blankenship defeated Greene County’s Nick Moody and Social Circle’s Ryan Davis to earn a spot in the championship match. He’ll face Bremen’s Corey Morgan. 
Armuchee had three wrestlers compete in Class AA action.
Braylen Scoggins (113) defeated Benedictine’s David Wells then was defeated in the semifinals. 
He’ll face Bremen’s Luke Campbell in the consolation bracket. 
Thad Moore (152) won against Fitzgerald’s Daniel Rivera before falling in the semis. He’ll next face Social Circle’s Aaron Forrester. 
Easton Mathis (106) was defeated in the first round and in the consolation bracket. 
Coosa’s Tyler Chastain (145) was defeated in the first round then defeated Social Circle’s Justin Givens in the consolation bracket. He’ll next face Jefferson’s Jack Dollar. 
Model also had three competitors in the event. Dustin Rogers (138), Lance Morris (220) and Dakota Willerson (195) were beaten in the first and consolation rounds.
Rome High sent five wrestlers to the state competition. Triston Payne (132) downed Landon McFarland of Winder Barrow in the first round before falling to Northside Columbus’ Sam James. Payne then defeated Ola’s Hunter Hogan in the consolation bracket. Payne will next face Villa Rica’s Tristan Ware. 
Joey Fricks (145) was defeated in the first and consolation rounds. 
Elijah Kerr-Brown (160) defeated Evans’ Monty Britton in the first round then Kell’s Calvin Irby before being defeated by Pope’s Billy Meek. He will next face South Paulding’s Cameron Parker. Sean Klasson (195) was defeated in the first and consolation rounds. 
Arius Ofum (220) defeated Effingham’s Cheyenne Hunt in the first round then was defeated by Pope’s Joey Tabachino. Ofum then defeated Northside Warner Robins’ Diego Smith before falling to South Paulding’s Devon Cobb. 
In Class AAAA, Cedartown’s Jordan Watkins (195) defeated Eastside’s Garrett Yates then downed Troup’s Michael Mackfield in the quarterfinals. Watkins then won against South Effingham’s Tyler Smith in the semifinals to qualify for the championship match. 
Cedartown’s Jonas Ritter downed Baldwin’s Willie Milner then beat Locust Grove’s Chaz Brown before losing in the semifinals to Shaw’s Jamal Mitchell. He will next face Cairo’s Paul Coleman.
Rockmart took six wrestlers to Macon to compete in Class AAA action. Dennis Wolfe, the 138-pound Class AAA west sectional champion, will square off with Oconee County’s Jake Hodges today  in the state championship match.
Wolfe will enter the contest with a 33-4 record and Hodges will come in at 65-0. Wolfe made it to the state title match by pinning Jackson’s Zak Evans in the opening round and then earning a 4-0 decision win over Morgan County’s Quentavious Jackson.
Rockmart’s Nick Forsyth, 126 pounds, won by pinfall over Dodge County’s Will Morgan in the opening round at state, but lost to Banks County’s Mason Patton by major decision, 13-2. 
Jason Wolfe, 120 pounds, picked up an 8-1 decision win over Jackson’s JT Wood in the first round. But lost to Ringgold’s Sam Shepard, by decision, 5-4, in round two. Marlon Morales, 160 pounds, defeated White County’s Wil Stonecypher by decision, 15-7 to start the state tournament. In the second round, Morales lost to Banks County’s Wes Faulkner by decision, 3-2. Zack Kirby, 170 pounds, entered the state tournament having just won the Class AAA west sectional champship. 
However, Kirby lost to Swainsboro’s Dalvin Lott in the opening round by a 5-4 decision. Kirby then fell to Cartersville’s Gerry Vassel by a decision of 6-1 in the loser’s bracket.
Brett Arnold, 106 pounds, also represented Rockmart at state. Arnold lost to Buford’s Darius Bunch by pinfall in the opening round before North Murray’s Alex Gambino pinned him in the loser’s bracket.
