WRESTLING: Gordon Lee, Holy Innocents' leading the way in Class A

The first round of the Class A state wrestling tournament is in the books, and as expected, it appears to be a two-horse race for the state championship.

This afternoon in Macon, Gordon Lee put 10 of its 13 wrestlers through to tonight’s semifinals and leads the team standings with 66 points. Rival Holy Innocents’ has nine in the semis and is second with 58 points.

Commerce (37) is third, followed by Irwin County and Mt. Zion (27), who are tied for fourth. Darlington (20) is eight and Trion (7) is tied for 12th place overall.

Advancing to the semifinals for the Trojans are Stihl Lance (106), Jonny Ragsdale (113), Blake Clayton (120), Alex Spires (138), Will Jacks (145), Clayton Reeves (170), Corey Jewell (195), and Dallas Goodlet (220), who all won by pin. Dylan Skipper (132) claimed an 11-10 decision, and Shane Farmer (182) won his first bout of the tournament, 4-2.

Mika Clark (126) lost an 11-4 decision, while Sydney Rhinehart (152) and Jonathan Bettis (160) were both pinned. All three are still alive in the consolation brackets.

Darlington has three wrestlers in the semis and one in the consolation brackets. Jule Peek (126) won his first bout, 9-1, while Jordan Beck (152) and Hayden Cook (170) both won by pinfall. Landon Lawrence (182) was beaten, 13-4, in his first-round match.

Trion has just one wrestler left with a chance to win a state championship as Chandler Lathem (160) pinned in his first match.

Henri Ambrocio (106), Ben Morgan (113), Andrew McGuire (132), and Dustin Thrasher (138) all lost their first match, but are still alive in the consolation brackets.
