WRESTLING: Frye, Moore finish second at 7-AAAA tourney for Heritage

ELLIJAY — The Heritage Generals did not have a single individual champion crowned on Saturday, but they will still send five wrestlers to next weekend’s Class AAAA West Sectionals with hopes of seeing all five qualify for state.

Austin Frye and Michael Moore came the closest to winning area titles.

Frye fell to Gilmer’s Cameron Perry, 8-0, in the 126-pound finals, while Moore was pinned by Dalton’s Sydney Wheeler at the 3:18 mark of the 182-pound finals. Both Perry and Wheeler won individual state titles a year ago.

Isaiah Knight (113), Tyler Hill (120), and Jacob Stephens (138) each finished third to secure a berth in the sectionals.

Gilmer (232.5 points) won the area title, followed by LaFayette (160) and Southeast Whitfield (147). Cass (140.5) finished in fourth place, followed by Heritage (109), Northwest Whitfield (91), Cedartown (72), Dalton (54), Ridgeland (50), Pickens (37), and River Ridge (25).

Pickens High School will host the West Sectional tournament next weekend, which includes the top four wrestlers in each weight class from Areas 1, 5, 6, and 7. The top eight in each class will advance to the Class AAAA State tournament, Feb. 14-16, in Macon.
