WEDNESDAY'S PREP ROUNDUP: Pepperell tennis teams get wins over Chattooga

Pepperell’s tennis teams picked up a pair of Region 7-AA wins Wednesday as the boys and girls beat Chattooga by a score of 4-1 in Summerville.

For the boys, No. 1 singles player Donovan Rochester won his match 6-0, 6-1, while No. 2 player Jordan Purser won 6-0, 6-1, and No. 3 player Zane Camp won 6-0, 6-0.

The doubles team of Tyler Whelchel and Chandler Ortwein also won, going three sets before taking the match 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

On the girls’ side, Pepperell’s No. 1 singles player Zip Gumienny won 6-1, 6-0, and No. 2 player Abby Davenport won 6-4, 6-3. The Lady Dragons’ No. 1 doubles team of Ragan Ware and Allie Williams won 6-1, 6-1, while the No. 2 team of Carrington Nails and Jayden Brumbelow won 6-1, 6-0.

Pepperell plays again on Monday against Armuchee at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.

Rockmart tops Cedartown

The Rockmart tennis teams swept Polk County rival Cedartown at home Wednesday night with the boys winning 4-1 and the girls winning 3-2.

The visiting Bulldogs began with No. 1 singles player Stephen Walker winning 7-5, 6-2, while its No. 1 doubles team of Jayan Kent and Noah Beck won 6-0, 1-6, 6-0.

But Rockmart took the other singles matches, with Timothy Malone winning 6-4, 6-0, and Jackson Norris winning 6-2, 6-3. The Jackets’ doubles team of Bennett Vest and Russell Head clinched things with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 2 slot.

For the girls, Rockmart No. 1 singles player Emma Evans won 6-0, 6-1, while No. 2 player Mary Ella Owens won 6-1, 6-3. The Lady Jackets’ No. 1 doubles team of Anna Smith and Alexis Clanton won 6-3, 6-1, while the No. 2 doubles team won via forfeit.

The Cedartown girls did get a win from No. 3 singles player Katie Puckett, who took her match in a 10-point tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.

Rockmart plays again today against Trion at the Rome Tennis Center at 4 p.m., while Cedartown hosts Cartersville at 4:30 p.m.
