SOCCER: After a week off, Rockmart returns to action

After enjoying a week off for spring break, the Rockmart High School Yellow Jackets soccer team was hoping to return to the fields in victorious form. Instead, the Yellow Jackets have lost two games.

“We’ve had a tough week back,” Yellow Jackets head coach James Schroeder said.

On Monday, the Yellow Jackets lost to Bremen 4-1.

“They are a much improved team,” Schroeder said. “The first half, we came out very sloppy and our week off showed. We held them scoreless in the second half and played well. Still, I think it was a game we could have won.”

On Wednesday, the Yellow Jackets fell to Model 3-0.

“It was extremely frustrating because it’s a game I feel we deserved to win,” Schroeder said. “We dominated possession and had tons of opportunities, but we just couldn’t finish in the final third. If you don’t take care of your opportunities when they arise, you let teams sneak up and beat you. And that is what happened last night.”

Caleb Woods, Kyle Smith and Warren Manis each scored a goal for the Blue Devils. Goalkeeper Jacob Pearson had 15 saves for Model.

“We are playing in the Clash on The Coosa tournament this weekend,” Schroeder said. “And we will play Cedartown on April 23.”

The Lady Jackets, meanwhile, are 3-5 on the season but are still in the hunt for a playoff spot in Region 4-AAA.

“We have a couple of more games to play, but only one more region game,” Lady Jackets head coach Krista Crawford said. “We will finish either in third or fourth place depending on the outcome of the last region game.”
