An evening of honoring the top high school cross country talent in the area will precede a morning of running for a good cause this weekend.
The 2017 GoGo Running All-Area High School Cross Country teams will be honored Friday at the group’s annual All-Area banquet at 6 p.m. at The Well, part of the campus of West Rome Baptist Church, 914 Shorter Ave.
Part of the event will include the reveal of this year’s Female and Male Runners of the Year.
Joining the banquet as the guest speaker will be Olympian Paul Chelimo. A former student-athlete at Shorter University, Chelimo took bronze in the 5,000 meters at this year’s World Championships and won silver while representing the United States at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games
The morning after the banquet, Chelimo is set to join the participants of the River City Bank Rome Half Marathon as it starts at State Mutual Stadium on Saturday morning. Runners can also choose to do a half marathon relay or a 5K race.
The race benefits the area’s high school cross country programs and has raised more than $15,000 for the area’s prep teams since its inception.
Saturday morning’s races begin with the 5K at 8 a.m. and the half marathon and relay starting at 8:05.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the above link or at the door using cash, check or credit.
