The Pepperell Lady Dragons wasted no time in getting off to a good start in the Region 7-AA softball tournament Saturday as they opened with a three-inning, 15-0 win over Model at Alto Park.
The Lady Blue Devils earned their way into the contest against the tournament’s No. 3 seed after outlasting Gordon Central earlier in the day with a 9-4 win in extra innings.
Anna Cowan led the way for Pepperell (12-13) as she had two hits and five RBIs. Baylee Wright had two hits and three RBIs while also getting the win on the mound for the Lady Dragons. She struck out four and gave up just two hits in three innings.
Pepperell’s Maycy Owens had three RBIs, while Maddie Clay led the team with three hits. The Lady Dragons scored nine runs in the first inning before adding five in the bottom of the second and one more in the third to end the game because of the run rule.
Model (4-28) began the day by facing Gordon Central for the second time in four days and having to go to extra innings once again before pulling out a victory.
In the other games, Coosa lost to Dade County in an opening round game, and the Lady Wolverines won their second game as well, beating No. 4 seed Chattooga 11-6.
The double-elimination tournament resumes Monday at Alto Park with Coosa facing Model and Gordon Central taking on Chattooga at 4 p.m. Pepperell will play No. 2 seed Armuchee at 6 p.m. Dade County and top-seeded Rockmart also start at 6 p.m.
