Georgia’s best high school softball teams are in Columbus today to start the state championship tournaments and a trio of area teams are in the mix, looking to stay alive for the extent of the three-day bracket.
Both Rockmart and Armuchee are in the Class AA state tournament, with each team’s first game scheduled for today at 3 p.m. The Lady Jackets begin the tournament against Dodge County, while Armuchee takes on Bacon County.
Trion earned a spot in the Class A Public bracket and plays at 9 a.m. against Marion County.
This is Rockmart’s second consecutive appearance in Columbus, and it enters as a possible favorite to go all the way. The Region 7-AA champions have dropped only two games all year and are currently riding a 13-game winning streak.
Just like the Lady Jackets (31-2), Dodge County rolled through its region, going undefeated against region opponents. But Dodge has faced its struggles, including losing a game to Vidalia in the Sweet 16.
Armuchee (17-11) may have finished third in Region 7-AA, but the Lady Indians have been consistent all season. They picked up non-region wins against Darlington and Sprayberry, and swept both Social Circle and Temple in the postseason.
The Tribe faces a hot Bacon County team that has won 10 of its last 11 games. The lone loss came in the Sweet 16 against Screven County.
