PREP SOCCER: Coosa girls, Pepperell boys collect wins in early-season 7-AA action

The Pepperell girls’ soccer team got within a goal of Coosa on Friday evening, but the visiting Lady Eagles held off a late comeback to pick up a 5-3 win in the Region 7-AA showdown.

Coosa made a strong push after halftime and went up 4-2 before penalties attempted to thwart the Lady Eagles’ chance at a victory.

Pepperell’s Ansley Davenport put a penalty kick into the back of the net in the 69th minute to make it 4-3. The Lady Dragons got another free shot a few minutes later but Coosa keeper Sarah Arrant made the easy save.

Coosa’s Ashley Medrano sent a corner kick in front of the Pepperell goal under the two-minute mark. The ensuing scuffle allowed Jasmine Limon to shoot the ball past Lady Dragon keeper Breanna Culpepper to set the final score.

Limon, Medrano and Eva­lyne Cruz each scored a goal for the Lady Eagles, while Emily Martin scored a pair of goals. Coosa improves to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in region play. Pepperell (2-3-1, 2-2) was led by Davenport, who scored both of her goals in the second half. Sydni Hazelwood scored the first goal for the Lady Dragons. Coosa will host Gordon Central on Monday, while Pepperell travels to Rockmart on Tuesday.

Pepperell boys 1, Coosa 0

The Region 7-AA rivalry was renewed on the pitch Friday night as Pepperell’s and Coosa’s boys’ soccer team battled it out for the first time this season.

After a scoreless first half, the host Dragons managed to get a goal when Ivan Sandoval headed in a corner kick in the 62nd minute to take the lead. Pepperell then held on for the win.

Pepperell improves to 4-2 on the season and 4-0 in region play, while Coosa is 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the region.

Coosa will host Gordon Central on Monday, while Pepperell travels to Rockmart on Tuesday.

Model girls 8, Chattooga 1

Jennifer Espinoza led the way for the Model girls’ soccer team Friday, scoring six goals in the Lady Blue Devils’ 8-1 win against host Chattooga in a Region 7-AA contest.

The win improved the Lady Blue Devils to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the region.

Nora Grace Snow and Anna Rose Parker each scored a goal for Model, with Parker also adding two assists.

Lauren Akemon also had two assists.

Lady Devil keeper Bethany Crawley had one save.

Model will next face LaFayette on the road Thursday.

Model boys 10, Chattooga 0

Seven different players scored goals for the Model boys’ soccer team Friday as they blanked host Chattooga 10-0 in a Region 7-AA match.

Tee Jarrard led the attack for the Blue Devils with four goals. Matthew Syverson, Nathan Weaver and Jason Ortega each scored a goal and had two assists for Model in the mercy-rule shortened game. Adding to the Blue Devil’s tally with a goal each were Cooper Robinson, Zach Nelson and Edgar Reyes.

Ryan Patterson, Greyson Padgett and Kirk McStotts each had an assist, while David Clark and Matthew Spears combined in goal for the shutout.

Model (2-0, 1-0 7-AA) will travel to LaFayette on Thursday for a non-region contest.

Darlington girls 6, East Hall 1

Darlington's girls' Soccer team won its first game of the season in its home debut against East Hall 6-1 on Friday.

Jayden Boswell led the effort with 2 goals and 2 assists, Alex Gardner added 2 goals, Hillary Tunnell added a goal and an assist and Morgan Ivester scored 1 goal. Flynn Flahery had 8 saves in goal.

Darlington is now 1-3 on the season and will open region play next Thursday vs Bowden.
