Bragging rights were on the line on Wednesday as the three schools in Gordon County met on the course at Fields Ferry for the City-County Championship Tournament.

The Sonoraville boys and Calhoun girls came away as the big winners.

The Phoenix finished first in the team standings for the boys with a team score of 345, 10 strokes ahead of Calhoun. The teams played the first day of the tournament on Monday at the Calhoun Elks Club with Sonoraville shooting a 162 and Calhoun a 172. (Gordon Central finished with a 191 on Wednesday, but didn’t factor into the final scoring because they didn’t compete on the first day of the tournament due to a match in Adairsville.)

Scoring for Sonoraville on Wednesday at Fields Ferry was Alex Hitchcock (45), Tanner Sanderson (45), Caleb Chambers (46) and Gunter Jordan (47).

Sonoraville coach Mike Farley said he was very pleased with his team’s victory in the tournament, the first City-County Golf Championship.

“It was an honor to win the first County-City cup,” said Farley. “The boys team has been working very hard this spring, and that hard work has paid off today. The putting conditions were very tough today, and I am proud of how we mentally handled the course.

“Overall, this is a great achievement for the golf program at Sonoraville, and I am proud of what the boys have achieved so far but we have work to do still.”

The Calhoun boys score on Wednesday was made up of Brock Stewart (41), Brody Henderson (46), KJ Sturkey (48) and Austin Cherry (48).

The individual low medalist on the boys side on Wednesday was Gordon Central junior Branton Bailey, who shot a 38 to finish three strokes ahead of Stewart.

“If feels good to have the low score,” said Bailey. “I feel like I played well today. The greens were pretty fast, but it was a good day to play. All the teams played pretty well, and our team is learning a little right now. I think we’re figuring it out.”

Other scorers on Wednesday for the Gordon Central boys were Seth Culpepper (46), Mason Miles (52) and Jonathon Nesbitt (55).

On the girls side, the Lady Jackets had a dominant day, scoring an 88 to win by 35 strokes over second-place Gordon Central (113). Sonoraville finished in third with a 124. (The girls tournament was only one day.)

Calhoun was led by low medalist Katie Rawls who shot a 43. Also scoring for the Lady Jackets was Amber Parker with a 45.

Calhoun coach Clay Stephenson said the win over the other local teams was important for his girls.

“It means a lot,” said Stephenson. “Girls golf at Calhoun has been good for a while now, and this year we’ve got four girls that can all contribute at different times. It’s good to have that kind of depth.”

The Lady Warriors score was made up of Teagan Lovingood’s 52 and Kayla Holcomb’s 61.

Makenna Burger (60) and Ashley Holcomb (64) made up Sonoraville’s team score.

Farley said his team is still looking to improve as the season goes on.

“We have been pretty consistent across the top six in scores, and that has really helped in our matches so far this season,” said Farley. “Our scores are not where we want them yet, but we have a few more weeks until region to get them where we think each player can score. The parents of each golfer should be proud also. Many have put in countless hours and sacrificed a lot to help their child succeed and improve on their golf game.”

The Region 5-AAA boys tournament is April 17 at Fields Ferry, and the girls tournament is at the Calhoun Elks Club on April 15.

The Calhoun girls and boys will compete in the Region 7-AA Tournament, with the girls on April 14 and boys on April 16.

The Jackets and Lady Jackets will next be in action on Monday at Coosa Country Club against Darlington.

Gordon Central and Sonoraville are back at Fields Ferry on Thursday along with LaFayette.
