GIRLS BASKETBALLL: Rome earns region win

  • ()

Rome coach Kevin Strickland wasn’t especially pleased with his team’s performance on Tuesday night, but at least he was pleased with the outcome.

Led by Astri Dupree’s team-high 15 points, the Lady Wolves downed North Paulding, 51-41, in a Region 5-AAAAA game at Rome.

Although Rome never trailed in the contest, the Lady Wolves had a tough time shaking free from North Paulding.

“I’m really disappointed in the way we showed up mentally,” said Strickland. “We can’t (usually) win that way and so what I’m hoping is this was a lesson learned on what we can’t do if we expect to finish where we want to finish.”

Both teams had their struggles, including North Paulding giving up 21 points on free throws and Rome turning over the ball numerous times.

“I’m very glad that we won, but I don’t think it was one of our better efforts,” said Strickland.

“It’s not the X’s and O’s that’s the issues. I don’t think we came into this game prepared to play every quarter as hard as we can go,” he said. “Their homework is to figure out where they want to finish and then come back mentally prepared to do that.”

The Lady Wolves will play a 5-AAAAA game this Friday, hosting Woodland at Rome at 6 p.m.
