GIRLS BASKETBALL: Pickens beats Cedartown, 56-33

  • ()

A slow offensive start doomed the Cedartown Lady Bulldogs Friday during a Region 7-AAAA, sub-region 'A' game.

Playing at home against Pickens, the Lady Bulldogs managed only two first quarter points while falling behind by double digits en route to losing 56-33.

Cedartown (2-14 overall, 0-4 sub-region) scored the first points of the game after nearly two minutes had went by in the first quarter when Arkeria Boozer converted a fastbreak lay-up.

However, Pickens responded with a quick bucket. The Dragonettes then began to press the Lady Bulldogs and that ignited a 10-0 Pickens run.

Cedartown head coach Johna Tidwell called a timeout, but that did little to slow down Pickens. The Dragonettes came out of the timeout and scored the final six points of the opening period to stretch their lead to 16-2.

Boozer scored eight points in the second quarter for Cedartown, but it was not enough to keep the Lady Bulldogs close as they fell behind 36-16 at the break.

Pickens (12-8, 4-0) outscored Cedartown 15-4 in the third quarter to take a 51-20 lead into the final period of play.

Cedartown did outscored the Dragonettes 13-5 in a shortened fourth period due to the Georgia High School Association's mercy rule.

Boozer led the Lady Bulldogs with 19 points. Morgan Gore added six.
