Girls Basketball: Lady Warriors in state tournament field

  • ()

The Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe girls' basketball team is headed to the  Class AAA State Tournament.

Head coach Dewayne Watkins said his young Warriors are still "in shock"  following their 47-44 victory over Gordon Central on Friday, Feb. 14 that earned  a berth.

The Red-and-White are scheduled to play at Oconee County this evening.

"We're very excited," Watkins said. "This is a big accomplishment for  this team. They've worked so hard. They won the games they needed to win to  reach our goal. Now, we want to see if we can get an upset."

Watkins said he's "always believed" in his players. He said getting them  to believe in themselves has been a different story because of their  inexperience.

The Lady Warriors starting lineup includes senior shooting guard Courtney  Crawford, who scored 18 points in Friday's victory.

Crawford  is joined by sophomores Madison Lewis, Elizabeth Oliver, Savannah Franklin and Abbi Mabry,  who is the team's second-leading scorer.

Watkins said together he hopes the Warriors can conquer No. 4  state-ranked Oconee County.

"They're a very disciplined team," he said. "They're use to winning. The  beauty of the state playoffs is everyone has to play to find out who wins. We're  going to complete."

The Warriors missed a shot at hosting a state playoff game, falling to  Cartersville, 63-29 and North Murray,  36-26.
