The Rockmart High School football team has been conducting their spring practices since Wedmesday, May 1 and according to head coach Dan Duff things are going well.

“Practices are going good,” Duff said. “The kids are working hard and showing good attitudes. We’ve got a good group.”

The Yellow Jackets will be fielding a young team this season after losing 14 players to graduation – including standouts Kwame Peek, Tay Twine, Trevor Williams, Tritt Fennell and Jay Thompson.

“We are real, real young,” Duff said. “Our main goal this spring is to find out who can play. I mean, we are starting over. We are thin and we have freshmen backing up starters. So our goal is to find out who can play and creat a depth chart.”

Duff did say that there is extra excitement around the program after the Yellow Jackets won a state playoff game last year for the first time in 24 years.

“It has created some excitement,” Duff said. “The expectations are to do well again this year, build off what we accomplished last season.”

Rockmart has about nine seniors on their roster, according to Duff.

“This team right here is so young,” Duff said. “We just want to improve each time out. Three or four of our starters may be freshmen this season. We just want to keep getting better and hopefully by the time we get to the region schedule we’ve grown up some and adapted to the speed of the game.”

The annual Black and Gold spring game will be held on Thursday, May 16 at the old high school. The middle school will play at 6 p.m. and the high school will play at 7:30 p.m. There will be a $2 entrance fee for the public.
