Football

CEDAR SHOALS (6-4)AT ROME (10-0)

TIME: 7:30 p.m.

PLAYOFF SEEDINGS: Cedar Shoals is the No. 4 seed from Region 8-5A; Rome is the No. 1 seed from Region 7-5A

HISTORY: Both teams met in the first round of the 2000 Class 4A state playoffs. Rome won 26-17.

OUTLOOK: Rome returns to the playoffs with a large target on its back and an undefeated record to back it up. Cedar Shoals is in the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and is riding a three-game winning streak. The Jaguars have seen some tough teams this season but will have to find something new to get one up on Rome, which is running full steam ahead for a deep playoff run.

NEXT UP: Winner of Banneker-SW Dekalb

RN-T PICK: Rome by 28

BANKS COUNTY (5-5) AT PEPPERELL (7-3)

TIME: 7:30 p.m.

PLAYOFF SEEDINGS: Banks County is the No. 3 seed from Region 8-AA; Pepperell is the No. 2 seed from Region 7-AA

HISTORY: This will be the first meeting for both teams.

OUTLOOK: Pepperell’s second half has shown how much the Dragons have gelled together as a team, winning four of their last five games and scoring at least 36 points each time out. Banks has an opportunistic offense that can score points against good teams, but lacks the defense to back it up, which opens the door for a multi-faceted Pepperell offense that has found its groove as of late.

NEXT UP: Winner of South Atlanta-Heard County

RN-T PICK: Pepperell by 21

MOUNT de SALES (6-4) AT DARLINGTON (6-4)

TIME: 7:30 p.m.

PLAYOFF SEEDINGS: Mount de Sales is the No. 20 seed in the Class A Private power rankings; Darlington is No. 13

HISTORY: This will be the first meeting for both teams.

OUTLOOK: It’s a clean slate for Darlington as it pushes forward with a chance at putting the past behind them. A tough schedule and close losses will have prepared the Tigers as they face a scrappy Mount de Sales team out of Macon. Running back Tijai Whatley is set to return after being held out last week due to injury concerns, and Darlington will benefit from it.

NEXT UP: Winner travels to Aquinas

RN-T PICK: Darlington by 14

MONTICELLO (2-8) AT ROCKMART (8-2)

TIME: 7:30 p.m.

PLAYOFF SEEDINGS: Monticello is the No. 4 seed from Region 8-AA; Rockmart is the No. 1 seed from Region 7-AA.

HISTORY: This will be the first meeting for both teams.

OUTLOOK: For the second straight year, Rockmart will host a first-round playoff game, only this time as region champions. A benefit of that is hosting the No. 4 team from 8-AA — a Monticello team that has suffered through a tough season but edged out Putnam County 3-0 in a mini-game playoff. Rockmart’s offense should be dominant as its speed overtakes the Hurricanes’ defense.

NEXT UP: Winner of Douglass-Callaway

RN-T PICK: Rockmart by 28

COOSA (7-3) AT ELBERT COUNTY (8-2)

TIME: 7:30 p.m.

PLAYOFF SEEDINGS: Coosa is the No. 3 seed from Region 7-AA; Elbert County is the No. 2 seed from Region 8-AA

HISTORY: This will be the first meeting for both teams.

OUTLOOK: Coosa is enjoying a return to the playoffs and some solid momentum after huge wins over Gordon Central and Model to end the regular season. Playing in the historic Granite Bowl in Elberton can be a daunting task, however, and the Eagles’ defense will have to do its part to create turnovers early and knock Elbert off its game plan, which Coosa has been able to do this year.

NEXT UP: Winner of Spencer-Hapeville Charter

RN-T PICK: Elbert County by 10

CHATTOOGA (4-6) AT RABUN COUNTY (10-0)

TIME: 7:30 p.m.

PLAYOFF SEEDINGS: Chattooga is the No. 4 seed from Region 7-AA; Rabun County is the No. 1 seed from Region 8-AA

HISTORY: Both teams met in the first round of the 2014 Class AA state playoffs. Rabun County won 24-20.

OUTLOOK: Chattooga was the Cinderella story last season, getting to the Class AA quarterfinals before a heartbreaking 30-21 loss at Hapeville Charter. Inexperience led to a 1-5 start for the Indians this season, and they start this postseason facing an undefeated Rabun County squad with one of the top QBs in the state leading the Wildcats.

NEXT UP: Winner of Temple-BEST Academy

RN-T PICK: Rabun County by 28

NORTHWEST WHITFIELD (6-4) AT CEDARTOWN (9-1)

TIME: 7:30 p.m.

PLAYOFF SEEDINGS: NW Whitfield is the No. 3 seed from Region 6-4A; Cedartown is the No. 2 seed from Region 5-4A

HISTORY: Cedartown is 4-2 all time against NW Whitfield. They last met in a regular season game in 2015. NW Whitfield won 42-13.

OUTLOOK: The Bulldogs are riding high with a 9-1 mark and the opportunity to host a state playoff game for the first time since 2002. In a tough region, Cedartown’s defense came up big, and it will need that to continue against Northwest Whitfield. The Bruins outlasted Pickens in a mini-game playoff 7-6 and will challenge Cedartown, but the home team should prevail.

NEXT UP: Winner of Madison County-Marist

RN-T PICK: Cedartown by 14

PACE ACADEMY (5-4) AT CALHOUN (9-1)

TIME: 7:30 p.m.

PLAYOFF SEEDINGS: Pace Academy is the No. 4 seed from Region 5-3A; Calhoun is the No. 1 seed from Region 6-3A

HISTORY: This will be the first meeting for both teams.

OUTLOOK: The region title streak secured for another year, Calhoun turns its attention to a dangerous Pace Academy team that boasts the top offensive line prospect in the country. But the Jackets haven’t lost a first-round playoff game in 16 years, and the combo of QB Gavin Gray and Calhoun’s talented receiver corps should provide the boost needed to get the win.

NEXT UP: Winner of North Hall-Monroe Area

RN-T PICK: Calhoun by 14
