BASKETBALL: Rockmart hopes to turn things around at Region 4-AAA tournament

  • ()

The Rockmart High School basketball teams did not end the final week of the regular season the way they had wanted, too.

Both the Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets limped to the finish line, although the Lady Jackets did receive a boost in the final regular season game.

Levi Wigley’s team had dropped three straight – and outside of a forfeit win over Coretta Scott King on Feb. 1 – the Lady Jackets had lost 16 straight.

But during the final regular season game last Saturday, the Lady Jackets traveled to Atlanta and fought hard against Coretta Scott King to earn a 38-34 win. Outside of the forfeit win over the Lady Eagles, this was the Lady Jackets first Region 4-AAA win of the year and their first win against a Class AAA team.

The Lady Jackets end the regular season campaign with a 4-20 overall record and a 2-12 Region 4-AAA record.

The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, dropped their final four games, losing to South Paulding 54-53 on Feb. 2, falling to Douglass 66-51 on Feb. 5, dropping a game to Chapel Hill 53-48 on Feb. 8 and then they lost the regular season finale to the B.E.S.T Academy, 51-48.

The Rockmart boys end the regular season with a 8-16 overall record and a 5-9 mark in Region 4-AAA play.

The Rockmart teams will now hope to turn things around this week as they participate in the Region 4-AAA tournament at Douglass High School in Atlanta.

The Yellow Jackets will enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed.

Callaway (14-7 overall, 13-1 region) enters Douglass High as the top seed. Douglass (14-10, 12-2) is No. 2, followed by Central-Carroll (14-10, 9-5), Jackson-Atlanta (9-15, 7-7) and Chapel Hill (7-18, 7-7).

Following the Yellow Jackets are B.E.S.T Academy (2-21, 2-12) and Haralson County (2-23, 1-13).

The Lady Jackets, meanwhile, enter the tournament as the No. 7 seed.

Chapel Hill (22-3, 13-1) and Central-Carroll (20-5, 13-1) finished the regular season tied atop the standings. A coin flip will decided the No. 1 seed for the region tournament.

Callaway (14-7, 9-5) is the No. 3 seed, followed by Douglass (12-14, 8-6), Haralson County (10-15, 6-8) and Jackson-Atlanta (9-15, 5-9).

Behind Rockmart is Coretta Scott King (3-22, 0-14), the No. 8 seed.
