BASEBALL: Rockmart beats Adairsville to end three-game losing skid

The Rockmart High School Yellow Jackets baseball team snapped a three-game losing streak on Monday by defeating the team that started the skid.

Playing against Adairsville, Rockmart took down the Tigers 9-8 in a non-region game on the road.

“We have had great games with Adairsville the last couple of times we’ve faced each other. Tonight, we played hard and didn’t give up when we were down,” head coach Courtney Hammock said. “I told the kids before the game that its not the size of the dog but the fight in the dog that is important and I think tonight we showed how hard we can fight.”

Alex Baldwin pitched six innings for the Yellow Jackets to pick up the win and improve to 2-0 on the season. Dalton Gowens pitched the final inning, ending the game on a strikeout.

Offensively, Hayden Graham, Luke Hembree and Gowens each had two hits. Tritt Fennell, Will Deems, Markise Smith and Baldwin each had one hit in the game.

Deems drove in three runs, Hembree had two and Markise Smith, Baldwin and Caden Smith each had an RBI.

“We hit the ball better this game than we have all year,” Hammock said. “We are still making little mistakes, but we are getting better in spots.”

Despite the win, Hammock knows the Yellow Jackets (2-5) can still improve.

“Our defense still needs some work, along with our bats, but if we continue to come together as a team we could have something great this year,” Hammock said.

Rockmart is scheduled to play Armuchee on Wednesday at home at 5 p.m.
