The Cedartown Bulldogs baseball team entered the week in first place in Region 7-AAAA, sub-region 'A'. Cedartown had a one game lead over Cass and River Ridge and controlled their own destiny as they played a three-game series against the Colonels.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs dropped all three games against the Colonels - including a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat on the road on Thursday - to fall out of the top spot in the sub-region as they head into next week's Region 7-AAAA tournament play-in games.
On Thursday, Cedartown (14-8 overall, 6-6 sub-region) received a strong pitching performance from senior Cody Mesta, but they were unable to produce anything offensively in the one run loss. Chaz Wilson pitched the entire game for Cass (15-8, 8-4), which clinched first place in the sub-region after sweeping all three games from the Bulldogs.
Harrison Barnett had two hits for Cedartown, including a one-out single in the seventh inning. However, the Bulldogs were never able to score a run.
Cedartown will finish second or third in the sub-region, depending on the outcome of the River Ridge and Pickens series. The Bulldogs will play either Heritage-Catoosa (12-9, 10-3) or Dalton (10-11, 9-4) next week for a chance to make the Class AAAA state playoffs.
