Baseball: Bulldogs cruise to wins

  • ()

An evening doubleheader in Chattooga County had fans shouting “how ‘bout them Bulldogs!” after winning two at home to keep the playoff hopes alive in Trion.

Head coach Jason Lanham and his Bulldogs see a perfect storm brewing in the horizon for a run at the championship possibly against the 6-A Region champion Gordon Lee Trojans, but first they’ll have to travel Monday to face off against Charlton County in the Public Single A semifinals.

The Trojans will also have to win out over the winner of Treulton and Lincoln County.

“I think that would be a great, great thing for this area. For their community and ours,” Lanham said. “You know, I’d love to see 3,000 people come out to watch a baseball game and I think that right there just might do it.”

A smaller but loyal crowd of Bulldog fans watched as pitchers Donald Morgan and Ethan Young kept the Jenkins County War Eagles bats mostly quiet for the doubleheader, allowing only one run over 12 innings of work between the two games.

Trion, scoring many of their runs off of 2-out base hits, shut out Jenkins County in Game 1 with a 10-0 win five innings, and played through a full game in their 11-1 win to finish off the night.

“Game one it was lights out, just fantastic,” Lanham said. “And Ethan Young, you know ... they just kind of stand up there and they look and keep asking ‘how come we can’t hit this?’”

Morgan, suffering from a shoulder injury, received a cortizone shot before pitching against Hawkinsville and pitched through a sore arm in his outing Thursday. Lanham said he’s playing because “he just wants it that badly,” much like the rest of the team.

Trion travels the six hours and 367 miles to Folkston, Georgia on Monday for the best 2-of-3 series against Charlton County with high hopes of keeping the season alive. Lanham is confident the Bulldogs can come away with the necessary wins on the edge of the Okeefenokee swamp.

“To win a state championship, you don’t have to be good for three weeks, you’ve got to be good on three great days,” he said. “Be great on three days and that will get you to the dance and give you an opportunity to win one. So far we’ve done that, we’ve checked off another day.”
