The Lady Hawks stayed perfect at Alto Park on the season, sweeping Miles College in an in-region double header Thursday afternoon. Shorter took the first game 8-1, before winning the second game 9-1 in five innings.
In the opener, Kameron Carter put the Lady Hawks on the board in the second with her third homer of the year, and second of the week. The hit moves the senior into a tie with Bre Johnson for second place on the all-time homers list with 29.
Miles (1-8) tied things up in their next at bat with a run of their own, but from there it was all Shorter (8-4) as they tacked on seven more runs for the 8-1 score.
Five of those runs came in the fourth, as the Lady Hawks tallied five hits and took advantage of a Golden Bear error. Peyton Barthel led off with a double off the wall in center, and scored on a Dani Lukas' double to left field two batters later. Hailey Baswell moved Lukas to third on a single, before being pinch ran for by Maddie Hunt. Taylor Martin then reached on an error, scoring Lukas to make it a 3-1 game; before Tiffany Holland loaded the bases with a bunt single. Carson Carriker followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Hunt, and Ericka Bynum added a single up the middle to bring in Martin and Holland to make it a 6-1 game.
Shorter added two more in the sixth, for the 8-1 score. First, as Martin delivered her first career homerun, a line-drive over the left field wall. Then, as Bynum singled down the left field line, bringing in Holland.
Payton Lippert earned the win to move to 3-2 on the year, tallying ten strikeouts in the game - with the first five outs of the game come by way of the 'k'.
Holland finished the game 3-4 at the plate with two stolen bases; while both, Bynum and Baswell, added two hits apiece.
In game two, Miles took the lead in the first inning on a Kathryn Lambert homerun. Only to have the Lady Hawks take a 2-1 lead in the third on an RBI single from Martin and sacrifice fly from Carriker.
Shorter broke through in the fourth for six runs to extend their lead to 8-1. First, on a 2 RBI double from Martin. Next, as Holland delivered a bunt single to plate Taylor Ann Oda; before coming in to score, along with Martin, on a double down the left field line from Carriker to make it 7-1. Finally, as Barthel grounded out to the shortstop, plating Carriker.
The Lady Hawks tacked on one final run in the fifth on a bunt single from Holland, to close out the win 9-1.
Hannah Draper earned the win, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts.
Holland once again went 3-4 at the plate to finish the day with six hits. While, Martin tallied a perfect 3-3 game at the plate with three RBI and Carriker chipped in with two hits and three RBI.
The Lady Hawks will be back in action on Saturday, February 18, when they welcome Union University to Alto Park for the start of Gulf South Conference play.
