A former Shorter University standout is getting his shot to make an NFL team’s roster.
Linebacker Jevaris Jones was signed by the New York Jets on Monday after the 6-foot-1, 228-pound bruiser was a tryout player at the team’s rookie minicamp.
The Griffin native led the Hawks and the Gulf South Conference in tackles last season, tallying 106 on the year for 10.6 per game and finished with seven games where he recorded ten or more tackles. His mark for solo tackles was second-most in all of Division II, as he posted 80 solos on the year.
Jones’ senior season at Shorter also saw him tally 16 tackles for a loss for 60 yards, 6.5 sacks and four forced fumbles – which led the GSC and ranked sixth among DII. For the Hawks he ranks third all-time in tackles in a season, second in tackles for a loss in a season and fourth for career tackles for a loss (28.5).
To make room for Jones’ signing, the Jets released linebacker Austin Calitro, who was signed as an undrafted free agent on May 5 out of Villanova.
