Berry football announces first set of 2014 recruits

ROME, Ga. – Fifteen high school student-athletes have committed to the Berry College football team, announced Viking Head Coach Tony Kunczewski.

The student-athletes have been accepted at Berry and will join the program for its second football season this September.

"Our recruiting plans have changed a little going into year number two," said Kunczewski. "We aren't recruiting the volume we needed in year one, but the high caliber of student-athlete has not changed. The young men we have added so far have possessed all of the traits we are looking for here at Berry. They are great players on the field, outstanding students in the classroom and good citizens in the community: they fit the Berry mold."

Justin Akin | DL | 6-1 | 260 | East Jackson Comprehensive HS | Commerce, Ga.

Joining the Vikings from East Jackson Comprehensive High School is defensive lineman Justin Akin. He played for Coach Gary Hughes and was a two-time all-region pick. As a senior he had 40 tackles, 10 tackles for losses and four sacks. A team captain, he earned the Wendy's High School Heisman, was an FCA All Star, Beta Club President and is a member of the National Honor Society. The son of Sandy and Robert Akin, Justin will double-major in chemistry and secondary education at Berry College.

Tyler Bertolini | FB | 5-11 | 225 | Gilmer HS | Ellijay, Ga.

Tyler Bertolini played for Head Coach Wesley Tankersley at Gilmer High School. A fullback, he ran for 2620 yards and 21 touchdowns in his prep career. He also collected 107 tackles and forced three fumbles as a senior at linebacker. As a running back, He earned all-region honors three times and was an Academic All State Team selection. Bertolini also wrestled and played baseball--and was in the Beta Club--as a prep. The son of Michelle and Tony Bertolini, Tyler will major in exercise science at Berry.

Evan Breakspear | LB | 6-0 | 220 | Jefferson County HS | Jefferson, Ga.

Evan Breakspear joins the Vikings from Jackson County High School, where he played for Head Coach Benji Harrison. A linebacker, he recorded 356 tackles and 20 tackles for loss in his career. As a senior, he led the area with 172 tackles, caused four fumbles and had three sacks. He was tabbed first team all-region, all-area and played in the FCA All Star Game. Breakspear is a scholar athlete and member of the National Honor Society. The son of Cathy and Craig Breakspear, Evan will be a pre-med major at Berry.

Coleton Brindle | DB | 5-11 | 185 | Mountain View HS | Lawrenceville, Ga.

Coleton Brindle is a defensive back from Mountain View High School, where he played for Coach Doug Giacone. He recorded 206 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, six sacks and four interceptions in his career. As a senior, he was named second team all-region after posting 49 tackles and two interceptions and two sacks. Brindle plays baseball and is a sprinter on the track team and qualified for the county meet in the 100 yard dash and 4x100 relay. He is an honors graduate and earned the four-year community service award. The son of Heather and Steven Brindle, Coleton will study engineering at Berry College.

Andersen Carter | FB | 5-10 | 212 | Allatoona HS | Acworth, Ga.

Andersen Carter will arrive in Mount Berry from Allatoona High School, where he played for Coach Gary Varner. A fullback, he averaged 4.7 yards-per-carry for a team that made three playoff appearances. Carter earned the Scholar Athlete Award and earned a spot in the honor roll. The son of Collete and Brian Godwin, Andersen is undecided of his Berry College major.

Jonathan Fisher | LB | 5-10 | 202 | Harrison HS | Kennesaw, Ga.

Jonathan Fisher is a linebacker from Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga. He recorded 265 tackles

over his career and scored ten TDs and 220 yards rushing on offense for Head Coach Matt Dickmann. He was a three-time team captain and earned all-region honors on defense. Fisher was also a member of the varsity baseball team. Off the field. he is a honor roll student and a Scholar-Athlete. The son of Celia and Robert Fisher, Jonathan plans on majoring in business at Berry.

Russell Gillespie | OL | 6-2 | 300 | North Hall HS | Gainesville, Ga.

Russell Gillespie joins the Vikings as an offensive lineman from North Hall High School, where he played for Head Coach Bob Christmas. He was a team captain who earned second-team all-region honors and participated in the FCA All-Star Game. The son of Marla and Bradley Gillespie, Russell plans on pursuing a degree in pre-med at Berry.

Curtis Harper | OL | 6-2 | 230 | Jeff Davis HS | Hazelhurst, Ga.

Joining the Vikings from Jefferson Davis High School in Hazelhurst, Ga. is offensive lineman Curtis

Harper Jr. He was a two-time all-region pick for Head Coach Roger Metts and was selected the most valuable offensive lineman. Harper earned spots on both the honor roll and the academic all-region team. The son of Kelly Underwood and Curtis Harper, Curtis Jr. will study engineering at Berry.

Silas Lott | DE/LB | 6-1 | 165 | Pickens HS | Jasper, Ga.

Silas Lott will arrive in Mount Berry from Pickens High School, where he played for Coach Chris Parker. A defensive end/linebacker, Lott had 66 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and recorded eight sacks as a senior. He served as a football team captain and also played soccer and basketball as a prep. Lott carries a 4.0 grade point average and was a STAR Student finalist. The son of Jenny and Tony Lott, Silas is undecided of his college major.

Austin Lowe | RB/FB | 5-9 | 200 | Christian Heritage School | Dalton, Ga.

Austin Lowe, a running back, joins Berry from Christian Heritage School in Dalton, Ga. He played for Head Coach Preston Poag, was a team captain, an all-area selection and played in the North vs. South All-Star game. Lowe is also a member of the varsity tennis team, an honor student and member of National Honor Society. The son of Anita and Keith Lowe, Austin is undecided on his major at Berry.

Matthew Ogle | DL | 6-3 | 215 | Whitewater HS | Fayetteville, Ga.

Matthew Ogle, a defensive lineman, joins the Vikings from Whitewater High School in Fayetteville, Ga. Over his career, he recorded 167 tackles, seven sacks, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries and three TDs for Head Coach Amos McCreary. As a senior, Ogle earned first-team all-region and first-team all-county honors. Off the field, Matthew was a four-year member of Beta Club and was a recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award. The son of Suzanne and Mike Ogle, Matthew is undecided on his major at Berry.

Jerret Paige | DB | 5-9 | 175 | North Forsyth HS | Cumming, Ga.

Joining the Vikings from North Forsyth High School in Cumming, Ga. is defensive back Jerret Paige. He was a three-year letterwinner in football and second-team all-region selection as a senior for head coach Jason Galt. As a senior Paige was the defensive MVP and recorded 179 total tackles, two blocked kicks, one interception, four forced fumbles and four recovered fumbles. He was also a member of the track and field team. In addition, Paige was involved with FCA and Student Council, while earning the Academic Excellence Award as a senior. The son of Sandy and Jeff Paige, Jerret intends to major in biology at Berry.

Wyatt Peterson | QB/Ath | 5-10 | 210 | Columbus HS | Columbus, Ga.

Hailing from Columbus (Ga.) High School is quarterback/athlete Wyatt Peterson. Playing for Head Coach Randy Grace, he passed for 1900 yards and was the Region 4A Offensive Player of the Year. A three-year starter, he passed for 5,200 yards and 63 touchdowns as a prep. A member of the National Honor Society, Peterson is treasurer of the student council and had volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. The son of Susan and Jay Peterson, Wyatt is undecided on his major at Berry.

Aaron Smith | DL | 6-2 | 230 | Elmore County HS | Electic, Ala.

Aaron Smith is a nose guard from Elmore County high School in Electic, Ala. for Head Coach Norman Dean. A team captain, he had 55 tackles, five sacks and two forced fumbles as a senior. Smith also competed on the track and field and powerlifting teams as a prep. Off the field, he is in the National Honor Society, Beta Club President and was selected to Boys' State. The son of Melanie and JT Smith, Aaron intends to study biology at Berry.

Michael Wenclawiak | OL | 6-1 | 250 | Harrison HS | Kennesaw, Ga.

Michael Wenclawiak is an offensive lineman from Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga. He was team captain and a first-team all-region and All-Cobb County Honorable Mention selection as a senior for Head Coach Matt Dickmann. Wenclawiak was a Principal's Honor roll student for four years and earned the Scholar Athlete of the Year award as a senior. The son of Margaret and Mike Wenclawiak, Michael plans on pursuing a pre-med degree at Berry.
