Rome man escapes car after it bursts into flame

  • ()

A Rome man was taken to the hospital on Monday afternoon after escaping from his burning Oldsmobile after a wreck.

According to Floyd County police reports:

Benny Gladden, 78, was westbound on Horseleg Creek Road around 3 p.m. when he topped a rise on the road and collided with a pickup truck driven by Edward Womack, 70, of Silver Creek.

Womack said he looked in both directions before pulling out of Windsor Road and attempted to make a left turn to come back in toward Rome. Gladden’s car popped over a rise and struck the left front of the truck.

The car burst into flames and completely gutted the interior of the automobile. Gladden was able to get out of his vehicle but was taken to Floyd Medical Center and was still being treated in the emergency room late Monday night. Womack was not hurt in the wreck.

Officer Xavier Bray said he did not anticipate any charges would be filed because of the wreck.
