Report: Offender returned to jail to face riot, gang charges

A former inmate of the Floyd County Jail was returned to Rome from Gilmer County on Thursday to face felony charges stemming from an incident at the jail last October.

According to Floyd County Jail reports:

Robert Austin Miller, 25, of 1686 Scott Road, Can­ton, punched another Floyd County Jail inmate in the face back on Oct. 25. He faces felony charges of rioting in a penal institution and participating in criminal gang activity along with misdemeanor battery in connection with the incident.

Miller was indicted by a Floyd County grand jury on the charges in December. He was originally arrested by local authorities June 24 on a warrant issued in Gilmer County. He was held in the local jail until December when he was transferred to the jail in Ellijay.

Miller was in jail without bond Thursday night.
