Police say an altercation broke out between the driver of a Mitsubishi car and his girlfriend, resulting in the driver running off the road and into a vacant garage.

Mauro Cruz, 23, of Rome, was arrested Saturday on charges of aggravated assault, failure to maintain lane, possession of less than one ounce of marijuana and possession of drug-related objects, according to Floyd County Pfc. Leonard Whaley.

Cruz was traveling north on U.S. 27 when the fight started and he ran off the road, hit a ditch and then drove through the garage of a vacant house near the intersection of Depot Street and the highway, Whaley said.

Cruz’s girlfriend Melissa Ann Horelica was taken to Floyd Medical Center with injuries, but FMC spokesman Dan Bevels said the hospital has no record of her.

Cruz was being held in jail without bond Saturday night.
