Mr. Grover Cleveland Haggard Jr., age 78, of the Shannon Community, passed away Sunday morning, November 26, 2017, at his residence following an extended illness.

A native of Sand Mountain, Rising Fawn, Georgia, Mr. Haggard was born April 22, 1939, son of the late Grover Cleveland Haggard Sr. and Nettie Crocker Haggard. He was a resident of Rome most of his life. At the age of 17, he began his career as an appliance repairman with Floyd Outlaw Appliance Service, working there for 25 years before opening his own business. Mr. Haggard was also well known as a heating and air conditioning mechanic. He was a member of the Solid Rock Baptist Church. He loved fishing, working in the yard, spending time with his family, and trips to Harrah's and Pearl River.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Kell Haggard; two sons, Jimmy and Jerry Haggard; a sister, Vera Turner; and two brothers, Floyd and Lewis Haggard.

Surviving Mr. Haggard are two daughters and a son-in-law, Penny Clifton and Pam and James Hinkley; son, David Haggard, and his fiancée, Tina Roberson; and son, Grover Anthony “Tony” Haggard, all of Rome; fifteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Haggard; along with nephews, Ron Haggard, Steve (Donna) Bradshaw, Mike Bradshaw; niece, Sherry Fugate; and a nephew and niece, Bobby and Hilda Pitts Turner, of Freeport, Florida, also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the Chapel of Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 2750 Shorter Avenue, with the Reverend Ken Hinkley officiating. Interment will follow in the Lindale Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
