Garvis Wayne Reed

Mr. Garvis Wayne Reed, age 80, of Rome, passed away at his residence Friday, Jan. 20, 2017.

He was born on January 29, 1936 in Centre (Cherokee County), Alabama Mr. Reed is the son of the late Thomas and Mae Smith Reed of Centre, Alabama.

Mr. Reed was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, the former Martha Newton; a son, Wayne Reed; sisters, Evelyn Neyman and Sue Logan; brothers Ulysses (Pete) Reed and Hobert Reed.

Mr. Reed was a long-time member of the West Rome United Methodist Church where he was a member of the C.J. Raley Sunday School Class and, before ill health, held many leadership positions.

He attended schools in Cherokee County, Ala. and graduated from Cherokee County High School. He was active for ten years in the 151st Engineering Unit of the National Guard and he was employed with General Electric Co. for ten years as an Inspector, during which time he learned to fly with Rome Flying Service, thus fulfilling his love for flying that began at a young age. He worked with them as a pilot, attending many aviation instructional schools. In addition, later he earned his license as a Commercial Airline Pilot and was a member of the Airline Pilots Association. In 1965, he became Chief Pilot for Georgia Kraft/Inland Container and served in that capacity until 1984 when ill health forced the end of his flying career. After that, he continued with Inland Container as Safety Administrator until retirement in 1998.

He was a devoted animal lover, particularly dogs, and owned many during his lifetime. Also, he loved to read his Bible and devotional books and magazines, especially flying magazines. Mr. Reed is survived by; One son and daughter-in-law, Howard Thomas (Tom) Reed and Tracy Reed of Mobile, AL; two grandsons, Forrest Reed of Oklahoma and Cameron Reed of Mobile, Ala.; Nieces, Mrs. Lynn Doeg, Mrs. Connie Tucker, all of Centre, Ala., Mrs. Frances Tillery of Leesburg, Ala.; Nephews, Gary Reed of Cave Spring, Ga., Conrad Reed of Centre, Al., Danny Logan and Ray Logan of Rome, Ga., Ronnie Reed of South Carolina; a special friend, Ms. Glenda West of Rome.

Funeral service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, at 2 p.m. at West Rome United Methodist Church. Rev. Mark McLendon, Rev. Les Connell, and Mr. Howard Touchstone will officiate. There will be no visitation but the body will lie in state at Daniel’s Funeral Home in Rome. There will be a Graveside burial, Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, at Oaknoll Cemetery.
