A sinkhole opened Friday evening on Martha Berry Highway near Three Mile Road, causing the two inside lanes to be blocked off.
According to Rome police Lt. Paul Greene, there is no official word on what caused the large hole to open.
The hole was first reported after a motorist drove over the hole at about 7:46, and police proceeded to cover off the two inside lanes.
Police were awaiting the Department of Transportation to arrive to assess the situation. Martha Berry Highway, also known as U.S. 27, is a state road.
The sinkhole is approximately six feet deep in the center and about 10 feet deep on the sides, according to Greene.
