The body of a man kidnapped in Emerson and shot to death was found dumped on Interstate 75 Sunday.

Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Emerson Police Department and Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident as a homicide.

The victim was identified by the GBI late Sunday as Herbert Perkinson, 49, of Emerson.

Cherokee Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jay Baker told WSB-TV that Perkinson was found at 5:49 a.m. Sunday just north of the Cobb-Cherokee county line with a gunshot wound to his torso.

Baker said he was taken to Kennestone Hospital where he died from injuries.

According to GBI spokesman D. Scott Dutton:

Emerson police called the GBI at around 9 a.m. to assist in a kidnapping and armed robbery investigation at a residence in the 100-block of 11th Street.

It was later determined that the body on the interstate was that of the kidnapped man. Perkinson was discovered about an hour after the reported kidnapping by a passerby who called 911.

An autopsy will be scheduled and performed by the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur.

Dutton said the three agencies are working together to determine what happened and “to locate those responsible.”
