A former Cave Spring police officer accused of molesting a girl and coercing women into sex acts is scheduled for trial today.
Attorneys are slated to pick a jury in the case of Patrick Edward Earwood, 31. Jury selection begins at 9 a.m. and is expected to take about one to three hours. Opening statements will follow.
Floyd County Superior Court Judge Tami Colston is presiding.
The allegations against Earwood surfaced last summer after a girl said she rode in his patrol car and that he asked her for sex, police reported. The accusations ultimately led police in June to place Earwood on administrative leave. He was arrested July 1 and fired that day.
Earwood remained in jail Friday without bond.
According to an order by Colston:
The investigation into Earwood led police to two different women. The first woman claimed Earwood arrested her, adding that he’d free her if she performed oral sex on him. She said nothing, and Earwood returned her to his patrol car and started driving to the Floyd County Jail.
Earwood then asked if she’d “do this or not?”
“She responded, ‘You know, I’m going to have to do this?’ He said yes and pulled off the road,” Colston’s order states.
The woman performed oral sex on Earwood, after which he took her to meet her mother. She didn’t go to jail.
The second woman claimed she met Earwood during her DUI arrest. Earwood told her they could “work something out” if her boyfriend wasn’t present.
Earwood then took the woman to the police station for a breath test. She failed, and Earwood began driving her to jail.
Earwood said he’d lower one of her traffic charges if he could touch her breasts. She then moved closer to him, and he fondled her breasts as he drove to jail.
Earwood faces two counts each of aggravated sodomy, second-degree child cruelty, sexual battery and sexual assault against a person in custody. He also faces charges of aggravated child molestation, child molestation, giving false statements and violation of his oath by a public officer.
