The Floyd County Commission approved on Tuesday the purchase of two tracts of industrial property for economic development.
“These purchases are coming as a recommendation from the Development Authority task force, which has been looking at them for the past several months,” County Manager Jamie McCord said.
Commission Chair Rhonda Wallace made the motion to pay $107,500 for 4.68 acres at 113 and 113A Old Shannon Road and $1,236,000 for 10.7 acres at 23 and 55 Plainville Road. The Shannon property is next to the North West Regional industrial site on West Hermitage Road. The Plainville tracts abut the North Floyd industrial rail site at Ga. 140 and Ga. 53.
“This will make those properties more marketable and give us more right of way,” McCord said.
The 2013 special purpose, local option sales tax package contains $8 million to buy or improve property to lure new industries.
With the Tuesday purchases and $1.3 million spent to grade the 140/53 site, that leaves $5,356,500 in the SPLOST for additional improvements, McCord said.
