Rome BOE welcomes 4 new members

The meeting of the Rome Board of Education on Tuesday will be the first for four new members who were elected to their posts in November’s election.

Board members Dr. Melissa Davis, Jill Fisher, Alvin Jackson and John Uldrick will preside over their first meeting this evening, starting at 5:45 p.m. in the boardroom at 508 E. Second St. The board will caucus in Superintendent Lou Byars office at 5 p.m.

Board members Faith Collins, Elaina Beeman and Will Byington will continue their time on the board after successful campaign runs in the fall.

At the top of this evening’s agenda is the election of board officers. Collins served as chairwoman during the last term, along with former Vice Chairwoman Cheryl Huffman, who did not seek re-election. Board members will decide on who will fill these two posts.

In other items, Cassie Parson, a literacy coordinator, and Stephanie Dean, a teacher at West Central Elementary, will present on what activities are being planned for Black History Month, which begins Feb. 1.

Anna K. Davie Elementary Principal Clifton Nicholson will lead the Focus on Student Achievement portion of the meeting, updating board members on what has been happening at his school.

Chief Operations Officer Tim Williams will provide the latest figures on collections for the education local options sales tax.
