James Swendsen, Carrie Shaw, Emily Tumlin, Olivia Parker, Tim Naddy, Rachel Ipes, Alexis Arthur and Chris Parker are characters in the upcoming Rome Little Theatre production of ‘Seussical the Musical’ which opens March 16.

Rome Little Theatre has been pulling out all the stops this year to celebrate Dr. Seuss.

With the upcoming show “Seussical,” the characters have been leaping off the stage and into the Rome community.

Recently, shoppers at the Rabbit’s Nest in downtown Rome and Barnes & Noble were greeted by a multitude of characters including the Cat in the Hat, Mayzie LaBird, Horton the Elephant, JoJo, and more who had arrived to read Dr. Seuss books to kids.

“When bringing such fun and exciting characters to life, we really felt like it was important to get the entire community excited about it,” said Amanda Swendsen, director of ‘Seussical.’ “The stories of Dr. Seuss truly transcend the generations, and we couldn’t wait to read the stories to local kids and share our love of the books with anyone we could.”

The Cat in the Hat and Mayzie LaBird also visited the Heart of the Community Silent Auction where they met with attendees and auctioned a season ticket bundle to Rome Little Theatre’s productions.

The characters also hosted a Dr. Seuss birthday party with arts, crafts, games and concessions.

“I grew up reading all of the Dr. Seuss stories,” said Emily Earp (Bird Girl), “and it brings so much joy to see these stories still taught in the classroom today. The lessons are so valuable and build such a strong foundation for today’s youth.”

But the appearances throughout the community are just a prelude of things to come.

The show ‘Seussical’ will open March 16 and run through March 25 at the DeSoto Theatre with performances Fridays and Saturdays starting at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees starting at 2:30 p.m.

With musical numbers like “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!,” “Horton Hears a Who!” and “Green Eggs and Ham,” “Seussical” promises to be fun for the whole family.

The show is directed by Amanda Swendsen and produced by Daphne Arthur.

Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for students and seniors, and $12 for children. Tickets can be purchased online at or by calling the Rome Little Theatre box office at 706-295- 7171.
