Theta Omicron Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., presented its 21st Biennial Lords and Ladies Cotillion on Jan. 21 at Berry College’s Ford Dining Hall.
This year’s theme was “Enchanted Elegance 2017”. Some 300 guests were in attendance.
Sherry Turner, President, offered greetings and recognized special guests. She also thanked everyone for their support and encouragement for the eleven participants being introduced to society.
Dr. Tasha Toy-Berrien introduced Eric Collins, Environmental Compliance and Engineering Manager for Georgia Power’s Plant Hammond, who served as Master of Ceremony of the evening’s festivities. Collins presided over the formal presentation of the Lords and Ladies which was followed by the Lords and Ladies’ Waltz with their escorts and then with their parents.
McKensey Wheeler, the sorority’s Vice President and Event co-chair along with Courtney Williams, introduced the guest speaker, the Honorable Ardra Bey, a judge at the Municipal Court of Atlanta who gave the “Charge to the Lords and Ladies”. Her “Charge” was followed with the 2015 King’s and Queen’s Farewells by Tyler Grayson Dean and Briana Trenise Stevenson, respectively, both students at the University of West Georgia.
The 2017 Cotillion King and Queen were Calvin Freeman, Jr. and Emily Orr. They were crowned by the 2015 Cotillion’s King and Queen first runners-up, Jai’ Rus Creamer, a student at Samford University in Birmingham and Maranda Aleisha Callins, a student at Georgia State University.
Orrin Bryant was first runner-up to the King while Aja Morgan and Rachael Beeman were first and second runners-up respectively to the Queen.
Other award winners were Mr. and Miss Congeniality, Orrin Bryant and Aja Morgan; Mr. and Miss Community Service, Calvin Freeman, Jr. and Kimberly House; Mr. and Miss AKAdemic, Calvin Freeman, Jr. and Aja Morgan and Ivy Award of Excellence, Teliah House.
Honorable Mention Recipients were: Kaylon Brown, Micayla Goodgame, Kymberly House, Teliah House, Imani McCluskey and Madison McKinney. All participants will receive a scholarship to assist them with furthering their education beyond high school.
