Keith Black, a 2015 graduate of Armuchee High School and hospitalman stationed at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, was recently named the January Shipmate of the Month.

Black graduated in May 2015 and left for basic training in August 2015. He has been stationed at the naval hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, for 10 months.

At the hospital, Black is a team leader in the progressive care unit and is responsible for the supervision of three corpsmen who assist 32 physicians and nurses in delivering health care to 1,800 beneficiaries. He is a telemetry technician, responsible for providing physicians with immediate oversight of patients’ status, reducing cardiac emergency response time by 15 percent.

His motivation and positive influence on six newly-assigned corpsmen is unmatched at his level. He has drastically improved patient satisfaction across a 15-bed critical care unit.

Black joined the Navy because he felt that he needed to give back to the country that allowed his parents to give him the best childhood he could imagine. He also wants to further his education with a goal of a master’s degree in finance.

In his off-duty time enjoys hunting, fishing, playing baseball, trading stocks, golf and swimming.

He is the son of Jim and Rebecca Black.
