Roy L. Gilreath Sr. and Mary Virginia Gilreath (Turner) celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Saturday, June 25 with a reception hosted by their children.
Mr. Gilreath retired after working for 18 years at the city of Rome Street Department. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked numerous road construction jobs before his time at the street department.
Mrs. Gilreath worked more than 30 years at Celanese manufacturing plant in Rome until it closed. She then went to work as a teacher’s aide at Pepperell Primary School until her retirement, after which she continued as a volunteer at the school until suffering a stroke in 2010.
The couple married on June 22, 1946 and have been residents of Floyd County since that time. They have three children: Judy Bosin of Colorado Springs, Roy Jr. of Rome and Tammy Tidwell of Aragon. They also have five grandchildren and four great granchildren.
Mr. Gilreath has been a member of the Cherokee Lodge #66, F. & A.M. for more than 50 years, and both have been active members of the Etowah #30 Chapter of Eastern Star for a number of years. They are both faithful members of East Rome Baptist Church and cherish their church family as well as their Masonic and Eastern Star brothers and sisters.
Faith, a strong love of family and a stubborn refusal to give up are the keys to their long lasting marriage.
