Blood Assurance officials are putting out a call for help during the holiday season. “The need for blood is constant; however, it is often increased during the holidays and must be replenished by those of us in the community who are able to donate,” said Mindy Quinn, marketing manager for Blood Assurance.
“We encourage everyone to stop by a Blood Assurance donor center or bloodmobile during the already busy holiday months to help save lives in the community,” said Quinn.
Whole blood donations have a shelf life of 42 days, so a continuous supply is critically important to help stock both the Redmond Regional Medical Center and Floyd Medical Center in Rome,
Blood donations are traditionally low between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day due to travel and family gatherings. On the other hand, use of whole blood and blood products is higher due to an increase in the number of trauma incidents.
In addition to whole blood, Quinn encourages people to consider donating platelets, a process that generally takes 45 minutes or longer.
To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 18 years old, 16 with parental consent, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health.
The Rome facility is at 178 Shorter Ave. in the Midtown Crossing shopping center. People can schedule an appointment at the Rome Center online at www.bloodassurance.org, or by calling 800-962-0628.
